22. November 2015 - 17:06 - This is a pretty sunset scene, but it also illustrates why Antibes is even here: a defensible harbour. It's on the Saint-Roch peninsula at the south-western end of the Baie des Anges, where a Greek colony was founded in the 4th Century BCE; after entering the Roman empire in 43 BCE Antipolis remained the largest town in the region for 500 years. Subsequent centuries were... tumultuous, so Henri II ordered fortification in 1550, to protect the strategic location of the last French port before the independent county of Nice. The 16th Century ramparts remain at the heart of the modern resort town between Cannes and Nice. La Tour St-Florent was built here by Henri de Mandon in 1553, replacing a chapel, on a rocky hill on the north side of the harbour, opposite the walled town to the south. However, the current layout of Fort Carré ('squared fort') is the combination of four radiating arrowhead-shaped bastions added in 1585 and refined by the Marquis de Vauban in 1680. In July 1794 revolutionaries imprisoned General Napoléon Bonaparte in the fort for ten days as a suspected Jacobin sympathizer. The Emperor returned 21 years later, on his escape from Elba; he landed in mainland France near Antibes, but was unexpectedly rebuffed by the citizens. The fort was involved in the 1860 French annexation of Nice, but Antibes ceased to be militarily significant in the early 20th Century, so Fort Carré is now a picturesque landmark within a 4 ha park, offering excellent views from the parapet and accommodating the Musée d'Histoire et d'Archéologie within one of the bastions. The ancient port, once an embarkment point for christian Crusaders, was developed in the 17th Century and modernised in 1971 to become Europe's largest marina. Port Vauban now offers more than 2,000 moorings, for vessels from local fishing boats to luxury yachts in excess of 100 m in length. Note the cars in the foreground, for some sense of scale! The Baou de Saint-Jeannet (802 m) is sunlit on the left of the background, 18.7 km away in the Préalpes de Grasse, overlooking Saint-Jeannet. It's well named, as the Provençal word baou refers to a steep, flat topped cliff or headland. Baou de La Gaude (796 m) is to the right.
